Wheel straightening

Pothole hits, kerb impacts and slow-leak buckles all live in the rim. We measure run-out on the rig, straighten with controlled pressure, and refinish only if you want it.

If your steering wheel shakes at 50mph or a tyre keeps losing pressure with no visible puncture, the rim is most likely buckled. We mount the wheel on the straightening rig, measure radial and lateral run-out, and bring it back into spec without compromising the metal.

Buckled rims are common on Fife roads. A single hard pothole hit at speed can put a flat spot in the rim that you'll feel as steering shake, or a slow leak that no tyre fitter can find a puncture in.

Straightening is mechanical, not cosmetic. We mount the wheel on the rig, run a dial gauge across radial (in/out) and lateral (side-to-side) run-out, and apply controlled pressure to bring the rim back into spec. The metal is worked, not heated, so the rim's structural integrity stays intact.

If the wheel has a crack as well as a buckle, or if the buckle is too severe to safely straighten, we'll tell you up front. Pair the work with a refurb if the finish is also tired.

What you get

  • Radial and lateral run-out checked on the rig
  • Most buckles straightened in one visit
  • Crack inspection included
  • Pair with a refurb if the finish is also tired

How the work is done

  1. Diagnosis. Wheel mounted on the rig, dial gauge across the rim. Radial and lateral run-out measured against manufacturer spec.
  2. Crack check. Visual and dye-penetrant inspection where needed. Cracks change the plan - either we crack-weld first, or we tell you the wheel is scrap.
  3. Straighten. Controlled mechanical pressure brings the rim back into spec. Cold work, no heat. Re-measured after each pass until run-out is back inside tolerance.
  4. Final check. Wheel re-balanced (if you've left tyres on) and run-out re-confirmed. We don't sign off until it's right.
  5. Optional refit. If you've left the tyres on we mount and balance for you. Cosmetic refurb on top is the natural pairing if the finish is tired.

Pricing

Quoted per wheel after assessment on the rig. Severity, refurb pairing and tyre on/off all factor in.

How to get a quote

Drop the parts in for a quick check, or send us a few photos by email or text. We come back with a price and a turnaround time, usually same day.

Common questions

Wheel straightening FAQs.

  • How do I know if my wheel is buckled?

Three classic signs: steering wheel vibration around 40-60mph that goes away above or below, a slow tyre leak with no visible puncture, and visible flat spots or wobble when the wheel is spun off the car.

  • Can every buckle be straightened?

No. Severe buckles, multi-point damage and certain alloy compositions can be too far gone. We assess on the rig before quoting; if it's not safe to straighten we'll say so.

  • Will straightening weaken the rim?

Not if it's done cold with controlled pressure. Heat-straightening can weaken the alloy; we don't do that. Mechanical cold-straightening on the rig is what we offer and it preserves structural integrity.

  • How long does it take?

Per wheel, usually under an hour on the rig. Most cars come in and go out the same day.

  • Can you straighten and refurbish in one visit?

Yes. Often the same kerb hit that buckled the rim also kerbed the face. Pair the jobs and the wheel comes back straight, true and looking new.
